ANAPRA, NM (KTSM) — Authorities with the City of Sunland Park have confirmed that a 18-month-old child was killed this morning after the child was struck by a car driven by his father in the Anapra neighborhood off of McNutt and Carrosel, just blocks away from the Texas-New Mexico border.
The accident happened just before 8 a.m. Wednesday morning when a man who was driving through Anapra said he saw a friend of his and stopped his vehicle to exchange greetings. The man apparently wasn't aware that the 18-month-old, who was in the backseat, had evidently unbuckled his seatbelt an gotten out of the car.
When the man got back into the car, he struck and injured the child.
The driver took the the young child to the Sunland Park Police Department for assistance. Police began first aid, and they were also assisted by Sunland Park Fire and AMR. The child was subsequently taken to UMC by MedEvac helicopter just after 8:30 a.m.
Authorities with the City of Sunland Park have since confirmed that the young child died as a result of his injuries at approximately 9:30 a.m. Sunland Park officials have not released the name of the child or the adult involved in this case. We will update you as more information becomes available.
