2 Deputies on administrative leave after gunfire exchange with Nacogdoches man
Nacogdoches, TX — Deputies with the Nacogdoches County Sheriff Office were dispatched to a disturbance on CR 2051 shortly before 1:00 a.m., Monday morning. Upon arrival Deputies made contact with John Stevens, 41, in his driveway and he was armed with a pistol that was in his hand.
Deputies attempted negotiations with the man for nearly 45 minutes in his yard while Stevens remained armed and would enter and exit an exterior shop next to the residence.
Stevens was observed walking toward deputies and the subject disregarded commands by Deputies to stop and drop his weapon.
Bean bag rounds were deployed in an attempt to disarm Stevens. He then took cover behind some bushes and began shooting at Deputies with a handgun, striking the Deputies patrol vehicle several times. Two Deputies with the Nacogdoches County Sheriff Office returned fire striking the suspect.
Deputies on scene gave medical attention to Stevens until EMS arrived.
Stevens was transported to Nacogdoches County Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. Deputies that were involved in the shooting will have mandatory counseling by the Texas DPS Crisis Team and the investigation is being headed by the Texas DPS Rangers and an internal investigation is being completed by the Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Office.
