GREGG COUNTY — Gregg County commissioners Monday bowed out of a pilot program aimed at improving the county’s high infant mortality rate, citing lack of participation.
Gregg was one of 16 Texas counties invited to apply for a grant to fund the Centering Pregnancy pilot program based on statistics comprised between 2005 and 2008. In those years, Gregg County’s infant mortality rate was 7.4 per 1,000 live births, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services. The state average during that time was 6.8 per 1,000 live births, compared to a rate of 6.3 for the U.S.
