LeTourneau University will present iconic Christian rock band Petra during the 10:50 a.m. morning chapel session and later in concert at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 27, in the S.E. Belcher Jr. Chapel and Performance Center, 2100 S. Mobberly Ave. The public is invited to attend the chapel service free of charge. Tickets range from $20-35, plus applicable fees, for the evening concert.
One of the foundational bands of the Christian rock genre, Petra has a career that has spanned four decades. Although officially disbanded in 2006, key members Bob Hartman, Mark Kelly, John Lawry, Greg X Volz and Louie Weaver have continued to play occasional reunion shows and tours under the moniker Classic Petra.
Petra remains one of the best-known names in Christian rock’s history. The band’s concert stop at the LETU campus is one of only a few appearances in the first half of 2012.
Since its formation in 1972, the band has produced 20 studio albums, selling a combined total of nearly 10 million copies. Petra has won four Grammy Awards and 10 Dove Awards, also holding the distinction of being the first rock band inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
The band plans to take to the studio again in 2012 to produce another album. Past studio albums include “Beyond Belief” (1990), “Wake Up Call” (1993), and 1989’s groundbreaking “Petra Praise: The Rock Cries Out.”
Tickets are on sale now for $35, $25 or $20, plus applicable handling fees, and can be purchased at the university’s box office at (903) 233-3080 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, online at www.BelcherCenter.com or at the door.
