Last of 5 men wanted for capital murder surrenders to Lufkin authorities

LUFKIN — Lufkin Police tell KETK, Rafael Orta surrenderd himself at the Angelina County Jail around 1:30 pm on Wednesday.

Orta was the last of 5 people wanted for capital murder in the robbery and homicide of Robert Darnell Bennett, 26, on California st. in Lufkin on February 8, 2012.

The four other men allegedly involved in Bennett's murder were arrested in February. They are Osvaldo Hernandez-Escamilla, 18, Jacob Woodard, 20, Jesus Vela, 17, and Gerardo Renteria.

According to the Lufkin Daily News, Bennett's murder is believed to be the result of a robbery pact gone wrong. The 5 men allegedly drove to Bennett's home for the robbery, where Bennett was shot in the chest. He later died at a Lufkin hospital.
