Girlfriend arrested after allegedly setting up her boyfriend to be assaulted
Three people have been arrested for beating up and robbing a Smith County man.
The Smith County Sheriff's Department received a 911 call Thursday night from a man who said he'd been beaten up. When deputies arrived, they found the victim had been beaten with a baseball bat and robbed at gunpoint.
After investigating, deputies established that the victim was driven to the location of the assault on Shackleford Drive by his girlfriend, Rennasin Smith, 23, on the pretense of visiting two friends.
When the victim got out of the vehicle, he was assaulted by two men. One was wielding a baseball bat, the other a shotgun.
After the assault, the two assailants jumped into the car with the victim's girlfriend and left. The victim went to a nearby home, where the homeowner called 911. He was taken to a Tyler hospital where he was treated for his injuries and released.
A patrol sergeant who was on his way to the scene of the robbery spotted the girlfriend's vehicle near the 5th Street and Fleischel in Tyler. After a traffic stop, the three were arrested. Arrested were Rennasin Smith, 23, Decortlon Smith, 19, and Colby Martin, 19. All three are charged with aggravated robbery.
Friday morning, a search warrant was executed at one of the suspect's homes. The bat believed to have been used during the assault was found, as well as small amounts of cocaine and marijuana.
Deputies believe Rennasin Smith deliberately set up her boyfriend to be beaten up.
Bond has been set at $100,000 for each suspect. More charges may be pending against the three
