Rusk, Tx (FOX 51) — Local authorities are baffled Tuesday afternoon following the near-fatal shooting of a Rusk State Hospital employee.
Garrett Scott Curtis, 22, of Alto, was undergoing a new employee orientation program when he left lunch. After returning from his break, the victim told hospital workers that he had to meet someone and left again, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.
At around 12:30 p.m., he arrived at the hospital with a gunshot wound to his upper torso. Officials say he drove himself back.
Hospital employees immediately called for an ambulance and he was flown to a Tyler medical center and placed in the Intensive Care Unit. His current condition is unknown.
Deputies do not know how or where the shooting happened at this time. Sheriff's officials did receive a tip where the shooting may have occurred, but they were not able to find any evidence.
Rusk State Hospital released the following statement to KETK:
We are deeply concerned about our employee following today’s off-campus shooting. Our thoughts are with Garrett and his family. We’re working with law enforcement and doing everything we can to help each other during this difficult time.
