HUNTSVILLE, Texas — - An inmate awaiting a new trial after his 2006 murder conviction was overturned has escaped from a Southeast Texas jail and is believed to be armed.

The Walker County Sheriff's Department says 29-year-old Trent De'Ray Archie was being held on a drug charge when he knocked down an unarmed guard and fled early Tuesday from the jail in Huntsville.

Chief Deputy Butch Davis told The Associated Press that someone apparently left Archie a car with a gun inside. Davis did not
immediately provide a license plate number.

Archie had claimed he needed to call his mother, who delivers newspapers, when he escaped.

An appeals court in 2009 reversed Archie's conviction over the 2004 shooting death of Anthony Williams.
