Rep. John Murtha dies at 77
HARRISBURG, PA. - U.S. Rep. John Murtha, an influential critic of the Iraq War whose congressional career was shadowed by questions about his ethics, died Monday. He was 77.
The Pennsylvania Democrat had been suffering complications from gallbladder surgery. He died at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, Va., spokesman Matthew Mazonkey said.
Michael Jackson's doctor charged with manslaughter
LOS ANGELES - Michael Jackson's doctor has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the pop singer's death.
Prosecutors announced the charge Monday against Dr. Conrad Murray, a Houston cardiologist who was with Jackson when he died June 25. He faces up to four years in prison if convicted.
Murray's attorney Ed Chernoff says Murray will plead not guilty.
Jackson hired Murray to be his personal physician as he prepared for a strenuous series of comeback performances in London.
Danica Patrick to make NASCAR debut
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The Danica Patrick circus at Daytona International Speedway will continue with the IndyCar Series driver making her NASCAR debut in Saturday's Nationwide Series race.
"To be the one driving that [GoDaddy.com] car at Daytona means a lot to me,'' Patrick said Monday in a news release. "Racing in the Nationwide Series was my goal during this entire two-month preparation process, but we wanted to make sure it was the right thing to do.''

Toyota plans to recall 300,000 Priuses
TOKYO - Toyota plans to recall about 300,000 Prius hybrids worldwide over a brake problem and will notify the U.S. and Japanese governments Tuesday, a news report said, as a top executive will testify before U.S. lawmakers over recall woes that have tarnished its reputation for quality and safety.
The recall of the gas-electric Prius will cover the latest version of the cars that went on sale since May, Kyodo News agency reported late Monday.
Palin ‘Won’t Close the Door’ on Presidential Campaign
Sarah Palin said she “won’t close the door” on a potential presidential bid during an interview on the “Fox News Sunday” program.
“It would be absurd to not consider what it is that I can potentially do to help our country,” she said.
Asked why she wouldn’t run for president, the former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice-presidential nominee responded that she has not ruled it out.

Woman's lawsuit claims former Cowboy Irvin assaulted her
MIAMI - A woman claims in a lawsuit filed only days before the Super Bowl that former Dallas Cowboys star Michael Irvin sexually assaulted her at a South Florida hotel, an allegation labeled a false attempt at "civil extortion" Friday by Irvin's attorney.
The woman, identified only as "Jane Doe," filed the lawsuit Thursday in Broward County Circuit Court seeking unspecified damages for the assault that allegedly occurred July 4 or 5, 2007, at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood.
Toyota's chief apologizes for global recalls
TOKYO - Toyota's president apologized for the automaker's global recalls and promised to beef up quality control by setting up a special committee he would head himself.
Toyota Motor Corp. President Akio Toyoda said the automaker was still deciding what to do to fix braking problems with the popular Prius gas-electric hybrid.
Toyoda, grandson of Toyota's founder, was speaking at a hastily called news conference in Nagoya, Japan, late Friday, which was shown at Toyota's Tokyo office by satellite feed.
